Is Being a Mom Really a Full Time Job?

Time and time again, we hear people explaining how motherhood is a full time gig. Some agree that yes, it certainly is a full time job, and others shrug and are on the fence about if it really does take up that much time. I’m not here to argue either side, however, I am here to give you a glimpse into an average mom’s day.
Sun up, to sun down.

Daily planner for a busy mom

My day usually starts around 6:00 a.m and, for some reason my boys seem to wake up at the exact same time. They are in separate rooms, but for some reason, they both wake up between 6:15 – 6:30. So I will lay in bed for a few minutes listening (and giggling) to my baby babble while my toddler sings his ABC’s or recites an episode of Blippi. I’ll quickly get dressed and washed up before going in to get my toddler. My youngest is actually pretty good at waiting in his crib, and stays content while I help my toddler get dressed. We will then go get the baby up. We’re downstairs and I am making breakfast for my boys by 7:00. My toddler will pick at his plate, and my baby will shovel in literally anything on his tray (I’m so lucky with this baby so far, he is such a good eater).

We are out the door by 7:45 and I start my half hour drive to my toddler’s daycare. The baby and I are home by 9:00 and he usually needs a diaper change. We will head upstairs, and play around in the hallway, big bro’s room, and then head down to the kitchen around 9:30 for a snack. At 10:00 we head out for a walk given the weather is nice. If weather doesn’t permit we stay in and play downstairs in the playroom.

At 11:00, I start to make lunch and get the baby fed. I try to clean up from lunch while he is eating so I don’t have to worry about any extra cleaning when he is napping.

To lay down in bed…. or not to lay down in bed….

Should I take a nap, or not? Sleep when baby sleeps?

“Sleep when the baby sleeps”

It’s really not that simple. I get about a 2-3 hour window of time without any kids. During this time the following things must be done in order to keep sanity amongst everyone.

  • Laundry
  • Floors swept/vacuumed & washed
  • Dusting
  • Bathrooms wiped down
  • Menu planning
  • Meal prep
  • Appliances wiped down
  • Garbage and Recycling
  • Sunroom tidied
  • etc, etc, etc…

You get the idea….

Once the baby wakes up (Between 2 p.m – 3 p.m if I am lucky) We will have a quick snack, play around for a little bit until 4:00 p.m. when we head out the door to get my toddler from daycare. We live in a small town and so daycares are hard to find…We found one we love, but it’s 30 minutes away…and so yes, it does weigh on my mind like a ton of bricks that my baby spends two hours of his awake time, every day, in the car to pick up his big bro. #momguilt…I try to come up with fun things to do on the drive, and I talk/sing to him the whole way there to keep him somewhat engaged.

When we get home, usually by 5:00, I start to make supper, get the boys fed and then our nighttime routine begins between 6:30 – 7:00. I let my toddler watch some tv, or play on his Leap Pad while I get the baby bathed. Once the bath is done, I give my toddler the option of helping me get the baby ready for bed and read stories with us, or continue to watch tv. It’s about 50/50 what he choses, and I am 100% okay with what ever he decides. After the baby is in bed, I will cuddle with my toddler for a bit while watching tv. Then it’s his turn for bath, and the rest of his bedtime routine. When it’s all said and done, the boys are both in bed and asleep by 8:00 p.m. Aha, finally! Me time…Oh wait…first I have to clean up after supper, and tidy up the playroom, living room etc….

Come 9:00 p.m the house is tidied, boys are far off in dreamland, and it is time for some “Me Time”

So, like I said, I am not here to argue whether or not being a mom is a full time job, however, in my opinion, it sure can take up some of your time. I am not even taking into consideration having a full time career alongside being a mom… I’ll update this schedule once that happens. #goals

So yeah, life’s busy and is only going to get busier, but guess what…I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Moms… You rock!
